What is Quality Center Project Harmonization?

Project harmonization is the process of converting the structure of QC projects to be harmonized - ie. to be compatible - with a pre-defined Project Template

Why is Project Harmonization Needed?

QC projects can be customized to suit different kind of testing needs and testing processes but this benefit and flexibility can easily become a challenge.

Each QC Project has it's own Database, since QC projects can be customized independently of each other - this will often lead to the situation when projects have different structures in the database.

Projects with different structures present challenges in the following areas:

  • Sharing and Copying data between the projects
  • Integration and Reporting solutions have to be customized for each project
  • No common 'testing language' and processes between projects

Technical explanation:

The same database column in different QC projects can contain different types of data (CLOB vs VARCHAR, or Number vs. Date) that are incompatible with each other

 

What are the Benefits of Project Harmonization?

When QC projects are harmonized it means that projects are compatible and thus the following can be easily achieved:

  • Common Reporting on all projects
  • Common integrations can be used
  • Same 'testing language' and processes across the organization
  • Same Customizations can be used in all projects
  • Sharing and copying of test assets is possible and easy
  • Quality Center as the platform for Quality Center of Excellence

QC 10 and Project Harmonization

QC 10 has been released by HP in early 2009 and includes many new features such as:

  • Process Enablement - Project Templates, fields, user groups, lists and workflow customizations are centrally managed and distributed
  • Asset Sharing - sharing of tests, requirements and defect across projects
  • Cross project reporting

QC 10 new features only bring limited benefits for non-harmonized projects. As big QC customers tend to have a long life cycle for their QC projects this can be a major drawback
